CSM began in 1996 as a sub-division of NYC based electro and experimental music label Serotonin Records. The abbreviated name was a homage to John Selway’s very first electronic dance music project. The sound and style of this early work was the musical basis from which Selway founded CSM. The sound was equally influenced by UK bleep, Detroit techno and underground deep house from Chicago and New York, combined with the inspiration of the new sounds from the early techno minimalists of the 1990’s. Selway experimented with his own work and decided to create CSM to showcase his music, collaborations, and promising new artists. The label was run simply as an artistic outlet. In 2005, Selway teamed up with New York compatriot turned Berliner Dave Turov to re-launch CSM with the intention of developing the label towards its full potential while trying to reconcile its early direction with that of modern day minimal, techno, and house. Manufacturing and distribution moved to Germany and HQ to Berlin, while the label's heart remains in NYC. 13 years on CSM continues to evolve both as a creative platform for its principals, and in its quest to deliver fresh releases from a homegrown crew of friends and discoveries. Expect forward-thinking, distinctive, and versatile dance floor cuts that stand out in a sea of sameness.
