Derek Plaslaiko Remix on Perc's Vertigo Part 2 - 1909
16 August 2010
Perc’s recent ‘BCG’ kicked off his Vertigo series in style, hitting the perfect ground between heads-down dance floor rhythms and sonic experimentation. Now for Part 2 he continues further down this path with ‘1909’ a broken beat track that follows in the footsteps of similar rhythmic experiments on Ovum (Throb/Mathlete) and CLR (Submit/Trojan Bumble).
Perc’s original mix sets out its sound early on with a jagged industrial break topped off with reverb-splashed conga and vocal hits. Various drones drift over the track until a breakbeat straight out of the golden era of early UK drum & bass and jungle electrifies the track.
First to remix is Millie; who as half of Andrea & Millie on Daphne Records has made a huge noise with his fusion of dubstep and early 90’s hardcore. As you may know Millie is also known as MLZ, one of the key artists on Manchester’s much respected Modern Love label. Millie keeps the central vibe of the track intact added a speaker rattling sub bass and additional vocals shouts.
Next up is New York’s Derek Plaslaiko, a key member of Matthew Dear’s Spectral/Ghostly family, having recorded a mix cd for the label. Derek’s mix shows off his ear for melody as an ever-changing mono-synth line and fragments of the original echo around a solid 4/4 kick.
Finally Perc keeps his techno supporters happy with a mix recorded live through all manner of outboard effects in his London studio. The key elements of the original mix float over a rock-solid kick drum. Tailor-made for the same floors that ‘BCG’ proved so successful on, this mix works perfectly on it’s own or layered with either of the other mixes of ‘1909’.
